Collaborative project: Analyses of Thinopyrum species to broaden the genetic basis of resistance of wheat (Triticum aestivum) against important pathogens with special consideration of eyespot (Oculimacula spp.) - Subproject 1
Project
Project code: 2814301007
Contract period: 01.01.2008
- 31.12.2010
Budget: 87,880 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Analyses of Thinopyrum species to broaden the genetic basis of resistance of wheat (Triticum aestivum) against important pathogens with special consideration of eyespot (Oculimacula spp.) With respect to an environment and consumer friendly wheat production resistant cultivars are of prime importance. However, with respect to many pathogens the genetic base of resistance in wheat (Triticum aestivum) is quite narrow. In this project, conducted by the breeding company RAGT 2n and the Institute of Resistance Research and Stress Tolerance of the JKI, resistance against several pathogens was detected in Thinopyrum introgession lines and molecular markers were identified facilitating a determination of the size of the introgression fragment. By applying these markers in backcrossing procedures respective resistances were transferred to adapted breeding lines and can be used to broaden the genetic base of resistance against Oculimacula spp., Fusarium culmorum, Puccinia triticina und Wheat streak mosaic virus. The project thereby contributes to a protection of natural resources (soil, water, biodiversity) and to an environmental and consumer friendly wheat production, as in the long term view the level of resistance in wheat cultivars will rise resulting in a reduced number of pesticide sprayings.
