Collaborative project: Breeding methodically optimized intercropping of Andean Lupin and Maize as well as White Lupin and Oat with the aim of biomass production by using ecosystem services of Lupins. Subproject 1: Coordination, Rating of Combinations Andean Lupine - Corn and White Lupine - Oats, cultivation optimization (LuMi-opt)
Project
Project code: JKI-ZL-08-3217, 22009017
Contract period: 15.03.2019
- 14.03.2022
Budget: 796,000 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: integrating biomass optimized lupins, hybrid breeding, corn farming, oat production
The integration of lupins with high biomass potential into new cultivation systems will enable the exploitation of ecosystem services of leguminous crops for energy crop cultivation in the coming project. The system of intercropping maize with Andean lupins (Lupinus mutabilis) is to be based on the hybrid breeding methodology of combining optimized partners that have been tested and selected for their suitability for combination with the respective complementary partner species. This will result in a more sustainable biomass production and an increase in the crop species diversity in this area. Exemplary, this system to find superior partners for intercropping cultivation by an interdisciplinary approach will also be tested for the combination of oats (Avena ssp) with white lupins (Lupinus albus L.). Additionally, selected issues of cultivation optimization (sowing time, row width, etc.) will be verified in separate field experiments of both species combinations. Quality characteristics such as the biogas and methane yield as well as the ensilability of biomass of selected mixtures are determined and assessed. By carrying out a demonstration production under practical conditions in the last project year, the feasibility of the results obtained should be checked. The project can contribute to new, more versatile crop rotations, higher diversity in the agricultural landscape and a gain in public acceptance of energy production.
