Screening of Sorghum-genotypes in terms of growth and resource use efficiency under future climatic conditions
Project
Project code: vTI-BD-08-31
Contract period: 01.04.2009
- 31.03.2012
Purpose of research: Applied research
For to ensure an efficient plant biomass production in the future, the climatic changes as predicted by the IPCC, i.e. increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration, temperature and summer drought, has to be considered. Sorghum has a high drought tolerance. In this project the tolerance of different Sorg¬hum genotypes to drought under elevated CO2 concentrations will be investigated. Plants will be grown on an experimental field under different CO2 and watering conditions by using the FACE-technique combined with rain shelters. The growth of Sorghum genotypes will be compared with that of maize and detailed growth analysis especially on water use efficiency of biomass production will be performed to detect variation of the response to climate change among Sorghum genotypes and among two different C4 crop species. The data will be made available to plant breeders for to improve and expand the spectrum of bioenergy crops well adapted to future climatic conditions.
