Purpose of research: Experimental development
The lack of sufficient resistance in oilseed rape cultivars against stem rot caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum requires intense disease control measures. The aim of this project, conducted in cooperation with German rapeseed breeders, was to provide a basis for improvement of cultivar resistance. In this project, we developed, established and validated reliable methods of resistance screening for a systematical search of potential resistance sources in the rapeseed and wild Brassica gene pool both under greenhouse and field conditions. An in vitro test with leaf discs treated with oxalic acid, a chief pathogenicity factor of Ss, showed good correlation with whole plant inoculations and could thus support breeders' selection work. Elevated quantitative resistance was detected in Chinese rapeseed lines and some wild Brassica species. The latter represent a potential for breeders to improve cultivar resistance against stem rot in the future.
