Purpose of research: Basic research
The development of inbred lines in rye hybrid breeding by continuous selfing is a time-consuming process. Therefore, the method of in-vivo haploid induction, presently practiced in hybrid maize breeding, could also be an efficient option for rye breeding. Using the in-vivo haploid induction crosses are generated by the mean of an inducer line as pollinator. The sporadically occuring haploid seeds can be of use for practical plant breeding as doubled haploid lines after the duplication of their chromosome sets. In a first step a wide range of plant genetic resources shall be evaluated for haploid induction ability to develop an inducer line.
