Purpose of research: Applied research

Modern agriculture is often part of the public debate. Tight crop rotations, intensive use of plant protection products and the loss of diversity as well as lacking supply of blossoms as food for insects are criticized. Perennial energy crops like Miscanthus, Sida, cup plant, switchgrass or tall wheat grass could help to invalidate some criticism. They improve biodiversity, enlarge wildlife habitats and flower rich areas. After the first year, no tillage is needed. This reduces working time and costs. In addition mineralization processes in the soil decrease. The use of plant protection products can be reduced as well. Concerning biomass yield, perennial energy crops can often not compete with annual field crops. Nevertheless, their ecological benefit can make the cultivation worth it.
