Studies on the biology of potato cyst nematodes (Globodera spp.) under Nordic conditions for improving management and regulation
Project
Project code: JKI-AG-08-1131
Contract period: 01.05.2010
- 31.12.2014
Purpose of research: Applied research
This project aims at investigating the virulence of potato cyst nematodes. Research results will provide important information to characterize virulence of potato cyst nematodes. This information is necessary in order to establish new for schemes describing virulence characteristics. It is therefore important to include populations of the potato cyst nematodes with new or deviating virulence characteristics such as those from Norway. The Julius Kühn-Institut already has a collection of potato cyst nematodes which will be expanded through this project. Knowledge on the virulence of potato cyst nematodes found in Europe is of great importance for resistance testing and evaluation, and the development and implementation of control programs. Resistant potato varieties play an important role in reducing nematode populations. This pilot study forms the basis for a new project and research collaboration between the JKI and BIOFORSK of Norway.
Investigations were carried out on the virulence of potato cyst nematodes. Nematode populations were characterized using a set of differential potato cultivars. New techniques and methods for the evaluation were tested. Results will be useful for establishing a new pathotype scheme. The pilot study contributed to on-going research at the JKI on the virulence characteristics. Through this study, research collaboration between the JKI and BIOFORSK, Norway, was fostered and has led to a new three-year research project.
