Quantification of upper canopy spatial structure
Project
Project code: 0315530
Contract period: 01.01.2009
- 31.12.2014
Purpose of research: Basic research
Three dimensional plant canopies are complex assemblages of leaves on various orientations and have an unpredictable three dimensional surface structure. Thus, light intensity changes quickly within natural canopies.
With this project we will use a novel stereo camera system to map the 3-dimensional surface of the outer canopy. An semi-automated routine helps to select single leaves and compute the statistical distribution of leaf-orientation in the course of the day and throughout the season. Changes in leaf display are a sensitive indicator for environmental and the plant functional status.
We will investigate the influences of different environmental factors on leaf orientation in the study species sugar beet and barley and will relate structural changes to light-use-efficiency in the canopy. Additionally, 3-dimensional surface information will be used in various other projects of CROP.SENSe.net.
