SME-innovative-9: Development of new market segments, breeding and new cultivars by means of broadening the gene pool of hortensias (Hydrangea) using biotechnological tools, sub-project 1
Project
Project code: 031A086A
Contract period: 01.06.2012
- 31.05.2015
Budget: 120,930 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
The three complementary working project partners have set the goal, results from the research on biodiversity and the traditional breeding of Hydrangea to combine with biotechnological tools for generation of new cultivars and thus to open up new market segments. The applicant Julius Kühn Institute plans work on somatic hybridization for hydrangeas. This is a promising alternative to overcome mechanisms restricting crossing and for the creation of broader genetic material as new basic material for breeding. The establishment of method offers the opportunity, genetic resources of Hydrangea to use fully. The subproject 'somatic hybridization' should be a major contribution to the future breeding of hortensias. The work will be classified as high riskily, since there no somatic hybrids for hydrangeas are known up to now. The expected plant material as well as the characterization of plants are valuable contributions for the breeding of hortensias. There are new biotechnological approaches to be expected. This is a valuable input to the development and implementation of new breeding methods not only for hydrangeas but also for other ornamentals and more horticultural crops.
