Development of methods for selection and breeding resistant cultivars of Lolium ssp. to stem rust, Puccinia graminis ssp. graminicola Urban
Project
Project code: JKI-ZL-08-3171
Contract period: 01.10.2006
- 30.09.2009
Purpose of research: Basic research
The higher temperatures in the summer in Europe have led to serious spread and infestation of stem rust in grass plants for seed production. Two and more treatments of fungicides have to be arranged to prevent large losses of seed yields in the field. Besides, stem rust causes damages on leaves in grasses of pastures and meadows and is responsible for serious reducing of forage quality. Accordingly, the sustainability of resistance to stem rust has to be improved. In this project basics for selection to stem rust resistance shall be worked out. For this purpose it is necessary to develop a suitable in-situ test for resistance in Lolium species. A genetic analysis using inbred lines and their progeny will be carried out to characterize genes for resistance and create molecular markers for mapping purposes and marker-assisted selection. The aim of the project is to define successful strategies for the selection of resistant material to produce resistant cultivars to stem rust. Knowledge about inheritance and characterizing of resistance genes are the base for a effective breeding of cultivars. The input of resistant cultivars is a precondition for a sustainable agriculture.
