Testing of winter barley against yellow mosaic virus
Project
Project code: JKI-EP-08-0017
Contract period: 01.08.2008
- 31.12.2021
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: BaYMV, BaMMV, resistance trial
The yellow mosaic virus disease complex of barley is caused by various pathotypes of barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) and barley mild mosaic virus (BaMMV). The only way to reduce the impact of BaMMV/ BaYMV on yield performance is to grow resistant varieties. Screening for resistance is commonly done via natural virus transmission by Polymyxa graminis in infested fields. Extensive screening programmes were started in cooperation with the Bundessortenamt of the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection to evaluate genotypic differences in barley accessions and varieties to the yellow mosaic virus complex. Yearly resistance of new candidates and of 5 standard varieties of winter barley is tested at 4 different locations in soil infested by various virus pathotypes.
