Unlocking plant genetic resources for hybrid rye breeding

Plant genetic resources (PGR) for food and agriculture are the raw material indispensable for crop genetic improvement. However, introgression of desired genes into adapted breeding material is often hampered by genes, which have a negative impact on plant performance. This problem of a common inheritance of desirable and undesirable genes in backcross breeding is known as a so-called 'linkage drag'. Breaking up of such gene complexes by natural, random recombination is a rare event. Molecular markers closely linked to the gene of interest allow for a cheap, fast and secure detection of recombinants. In this project, near-isogenic lines (NIL) will be established using elite rye breeding lines and diverse PGR as donors to increase genetic diversity of an agronomically important trait in hybrid rye breeding. The NIL will open the opportunity to study valuable gene variants of different non-adapted PGR of rye with precision not feasible before.
