Development and application of resistance screening methods to economically important fungi of carrots (Daucus carota) particularly to black rot disease caused by Alternaria radicina Meier, Drechsler and Eddy
Project
Project code: JKI-ZGO-08-1178
Contract period: 01.06.2006
- 30.06.2009
Purpose of research: Applied research
Infestation of carrots is very often associated with crop losses or losing during storage, in product quality as well as in the seed production. An important fungus disease on carrots is the black rot disease caused by Alternaria radicina. The improvement of the resistance to this pathogen could ensure sustainable product quality and stability of the yields. The application of pesticides could be reduced due to the disease resistance. The establisment of resistance requires new genetic resources. Thus, in the first step of the project, resistance screening methods will be established and advanced. For the assessment of the resistance different approaches will be used: detection of the pathogen with immunological methods and ultrastructural analysis of the host pathogen interaction. The pathogen isolates will be characterized in their virulence. Furthermore the advanced screening methods will be used to evaluate wild relatives of the genus Daucus for resistance to A. radicina. In the following, the resistance could be selected and transferred into the culture form of carrots by conventional and/or biotechnological methods. The project focus is on the evaluation of genetic resources in Daucus for improvement of the resistance to fungi diseases (primary Alternaria radicina).
