In-vitro bioavailability and toxicity of phloridzin loaded nano- and submicron chitosan particles

The delivery of bioactive compounds through carrier systems and thereby the enhancement of the compounds’ bioavailability is of great interest. Recent studies indicate that especially a particle size within the nanometer range can impact the bioavailability of nutrients from food matrices. Phloridzin is a secondary plant metabolite with anti-diabetic activity but low bioavailability. We hypothesize that the encapsulation of phloridzin in nano-scaled chitosan particles increases the in-vitro bioavailability more than its encapsulation in submicron-scaled chitosan particles. To prove this hypothesis, we encapsulate phloridzin in formulations of different particle size. The in-vitro bioavailability will be tested in cell culture tests. Furthermore, in-vitro toxicity tests will be carried out.
