Characterization and evaluation of the Fragaria wild species collection of the fruit genebank
Project
Project code: JKI-ZGO-08-4199
Contract period: 01.03.2017
- 30.11.2020
Purpose of research: Applied research
The objective of the project is the comprehensive characterization and evaluation of the Fragaria wild species collection of the Fruit Genebank. The project should provide useful results for efficient preservation and the purposeful use of the species in future breeding. Currently, the Fragaria wild species collection consists of 270 accessions comprised of 24 species and species hybrids. Because the Fragaria species are characterized by different ploidy levels, the determination of the DNA content using flow cytometry is a priority task. Resistance to strawberry leaf scorch (Diplocarpon earliana) and strawberry leaf spot (Mycosphaerella fragariae), to anthracnose (Colletotrichum acutatum)and to strawberry blossom weevil (Anthonomus rubi) will be evaluated in a field setting. For this evaluation an unsprayed block plantation of all 270 Fragaria-accessions will be established in the orchard. Resistance to the quarantine pathogen Xanthomonas fragariae will be tested for a subset of each species by artificial inoculations in the greenhouse in Quedlinburg.
