Project code: 0313391E
Contract period: 01.06.2005 - 31.05.2008
Budget: 155,470 Euro
Purpose of research: Basic research

The consortium QuaLIPID is coordinated by H.-R. Fries and aims at the functional analysis of genes involved in lipid metabolism in cattle and swine for the identification of DNA variation relevant for product quality. The quality of animal products is determined to a large extent by the quantity and quality of the lipid constituents. There are three major aspects of product quality: processing ability, palatability and dietary value. In countries with high meat and dairy consumption, fatty acid composition of animal products is considered a public health issue. The project aims at the comprehensive identification of genes involved in lipid metabolism and will reveal significant associations between gene and lipid parameter variation. Such associations will be the basis of inventions of new diagnostic tests for animal product quality.
