Contract period: 19.10.2016
- 28.02.2017
Purpose of research: Applied research
In Germany, the eradication program against Bovine Herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) has successfully and significantly decreased the prevalence of BHV-1, and the majority of the federal states are officially free from BHV-1 infection. However, in the last months, a series of BHV-1 incursions into formerly BHV-1 free herds in free regions have occurred. The reasons are still unknown, as are a series of questions regarding the efficacy of prevention and control measures in the affected farms, including the biosecurity level, the recommended schedule and type of diagnostic testing, as well as animal husbandry, quarantine and disinfection measures. Especially at the final stage of the eradication program, it is important to define the most effective disease prevention and control measures. The aim of this project is to cooperate with the last BHV-1 positive farms in North Rhine-Westphalia and to identify factors that have the highest influence on the risk of BHV-1 introduction and the success of eradication measures. The knowledge and experience gained will be used to develop infection control guidelines.
