EVA I FNR Biogas. Subproject 1: Design and optimisation of site-adapted cropping systems for energy crops in crop rotations

Project

Project code: 22002305
Contract period: 15.03.2005 - 31.01.2009
Budget: 4,177,160 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

Various crop rotations of energy crops are tested in typical production areas of Germany. Old and new crop species like Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosum) and sorghum millet are integrated in these crop rotations which are partly characteristic for the regions. The objective of the project is to use a broad range of species for the supply of bioenergy via biogas and to develop recommendations of sustainable cropping systems for farmers. Extensive data collections for an ecological and economical assessment of these cropping systems as well as quality analysis of the produced biomass, in respect of ingredients and methane yields, are thought to deliver new insights into long-term production of high net energy yields per area. In Bavaria, this crop rotation experiment is complemented by trials on mixed cropping and reduced factor input.
