Project code: JKI-GF-08-1172
Contract period: 01.03.2016 - 29.02.2020
Purpose of research: Applied research

The cultivation of chamomile, one of the most important medicinal plants in Germany in terms of area with Thuringia being the main growing area, has been severely threatened since 2007 by the occurrence of an unknown disease. Initial investigations have shown that the causes of damage are very complex. Both fungi and insects might considered as potential pathogens. Fungi of the genus Septoria and a fungus morphologically similar to Entylomella trailii, however belonging to ascomycetes according to DNA-sequences as well as species of beetle were detected as a potential cause during investigations at the JKI. Studies into the etiology and pathogenicity should provide information about the importance of certain pathogen for the disease, which includes a clear identification of pathogens, pathogenicity tests and investigations into interactions in host-pathogen systems. Research work into the diagnosis, biology and epidemiology of pathogens is essential to develop sustainable plant protection conceptions and urgently necessary to enable a safe chamomile cultivation in Germany.
