Collaborative project: Development of biological plant protection strategies against invasive non-regulated stink bug species with high damage potential - subproject B (BC-InStink)
Project
Project code: 2818713B19
Contract period: 01.04.2021
- 31.03.2024
Budget: 168,638 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: integrated plant protection, horticulture, animal pathogens, fruit production
The aim of this research project is the development of biological plant protection strategies for the invasive stink bug species Halyomorpha halys and Nezara viridula in their newly invaded areas. At the core of this research will be monitoring of the newly invaded areas for natural enemies, e.g. egg parasitoids in the genus Trissolcus, of these two stink bugs, the assessment of their biological control potential, and the establishment of breeding strains of potential biological control agents. Various field entomological methods will be applied to monitor the stink bugs and their natural enemies (work package 1). Species, which are shortlisted as potentially effective antagonists, will be reared to build up strains meant for commercial use (work package 2). Furthermore, in order to develop applicable integrated management concepts, surveys of damages in already infested or at risk fruit crops will be conducted (work package 3). Based on the results obtained in work packages 1 through 3, pest management strategies for the control of these invasive stink bugs will be developed. In addition, the information collected on relevant natural enemies will be compiled in form of simple identification aids and teaching materials (work package 4).
