Collaborative project: Recording and genetic evaluation of health data in dairy herds to enhance breeding for health and longevity (GKuh) - Subproject 3
Project
Project code: 2813502408
Contract period: 01.10.2009
- 31.10.2012
Budget: 154,652 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
The aim of the project is the continuous collection and analysis of health data in dairy herds in order to enable herd management and selection decisions for the reduction of involuntary culling caused by health problems in dairy cattle. In the participating herds health data are collected using the unique ADR recording code via recording lists filled by the breeders themselves or via herd management programs. In some herds PDA technique and automatic eartag recognition is applied additionally. Herd management factors like cow shed systems, feeding, milking systems, etc. are recorded, too. In a first step health data is analysed for herd management purposes. Results are provided to farmers by monthly reports. As soon as sufficient data are available genetic evaluation systems are developed and applied in order to differentiate sires in their inheritance of health traits to daughters.
