Collaborative project: Morphological and molecular identification of beetle species on packaging wood in plant health control - Subproject 1 (PHIDColeo)
Project
Project code: 2814905615
Contract period: 15.06.2017
- 14.12.2020
Budget: 50,940 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: wood utilization, diagnostics, quarantine pathogens, animal pathogens, forestry
Wood packing material may sometimes support the introduction of harmful wood damaging beetles, that can be a plant health risk to trees and shrubs. In some cases it may be necessary to cut down infested trees. To reduce such extreme impacts to nature and the environment it is necessary to clearly identify beetle records that are found during inspections. In the project PHID-Coleo the population genetics of the Asian Longhorn Beetle has been investigated in detail for the first time for its Germany populations. This enables researchers to assign beetle samples to a certain introduction event. Besides that a unique reference collection with samples of non-indigenous wood damaging beetles of the families Cermabycidae and Bostrichidae has been complied. It consists of 420 preparations of beetles out of 260 species, that have already been found in import inspections worldwide. A free identification book for a fast and safe diagnosis of the these beetles is available.
