Ovules are of agronomic interest as they develop into seeds, a major food source for humans. Tissue morphogenesis in ovules is poorly understood but in Arabidopsis it is known to depend on intercellular signaling mediated by the cell surface receptor kinase STRUBBELIG. We have identified two novel genes with a function in the STRUBBELIG pathway. ZERZAUST encodes a predicted β-1,3 glucanase, known to be located at the plasma membrane. QUIRKY encodes a membrane-located multi C2-domain protein. We will study the molecular functions of ZERZAUST and QUIRKY and investigate how these cell surface factors relate to the SUB receptor.
