Purpose of research: Basic research
The objective of the DENANA project is to develop criteria for the manufacturing of sustainable nanomaterials. Emphasis is placed on silicon dioxide, cerium dioxide, and silver nanoparticles which are added, among other things, to lubricants, catalytic convertors, medical products and abrasives. During manufacture, the respective nanoparticles are varied and tested for their risk potentials. While dealing with various interrelated issues of interest within DENANA, project partners expect to derive relevant design criteria within the next three years which are able to meet the technical requirements and at the same time minimise the risk potential of nanomaterials.
One part of the project deals with studying the long-term effects of the nanoparticles under realistic field conditions in water, sediments and soils whilst also analysing the behaviour and impacts of the nanoparticles under controlled laboratory conditions. From the combined short-time tests and long-time analyses, early indicators of long-term effects ought to be derived for use as decision-making instruments in national and international environmental regulation.
