Castration of piglets without anesthesia will be banned from 2019 on. Fattening of intact boars is discussed as an alternative. In this study it was investigated how the frequency of tainted carcasses can be reduced. One goal of the project was the establishment of genomic selection (gs) for boar taint. Therefore 775 performance tested intact boars (Pi x F1) as well as the purebred sires (Pi) were genotyped with the SNP60 Illumina Bead Chip and phenotyped. Subsequently the gs-formula was calculated. The accuracy of the formula was calculated based on an independent sample. Accuracies ranged between 0,65 and 0,70. In order to verify the gs-breeding values 162 AI-sires were mated with crossbred dams. 2946 intact boars were fattened and phenotyped for boar taint. Calculated heritabilities were on a high level (h2: 0,4-0,6). Furthermore it could be shown that the frequency of tainted carcasses can be reduced significantly by the selection of boars based on gs-breeding values.
