Collaborative project: Stabilizing the climate change affected rhizomania resistance in sugar beet by molecular identification of the resistance gene Rz2 and discovery of new resistance sources. Subproject 2
Project
Project code: 2814505310
Contract period: 01.02.2011
- 31.01.2014
Budget: 306,380 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
The objectives of this project are (i) to fine map the rhizomania resistance gene Rz2, (ii) to conduct a map based cloning of Rz2, and (iii) to identify new sources of resistance to rhizomania. We will finemap Rz2 in a wildbeet (Beta vulgaris ssp. maritima) population segregating for rhizomania resistance. For that, 200 plants from this population will be propagated and tested for rhizomania resistance. A marker enrichment of the genomic region around Rz2 will be conducted in a bi-parental reference population segregating for Rz2 and the new markers will be used for fine mapping in the wild beet population. Based on the results candidate genes for Rz2 will be cloned. The sequence information of these genes will be used for EcoTILLING in a panel of 96 genebank acces-sions in order to identify new sources of resistance to rhizomania. For future projects, additional wild beet popu-lations segregating for resistance will be sampled.
