Breeding and evaluation of sweet cherries with large fruit size
Project
Project code: JKI-ZGO-08-4196
Contract period: 01.10.2016
- 30.09.2018
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: sweet cherries, quality breeding
The fruit size is one of the most important breeding goals in sweet cherry. A large fruit size guarantees a high consumer preference and a high profit for the producer. The size of the fruit is determined by the number and size of cells in the mesocarp. In the last years fruit size QTLs were determined and first molecular markers were developed. The aim of the project is to gather knowledge about the use of these molecular markers for selection of large fruit genotypes in the breeding process. For this goal the fruit size and other phenotypical characteristics should be evaluated and compared with the results of the molecular studies.
