Interaction of abiotic stressors including food limitation on bee health and colony development under field conditions - RUB (NutriBee)
Project
Project code: 2819NA104
Contract period: 01.05.2021
- 30.04.2024
Budget: 81,678 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: bees, biological diversity, AI Artificial Intelligence, sustainability, Precision livestock farming, poison / toxins
The project NutriBee aims at studying newly established honey bee colonies during their most sensitive initial growth phase. Colonies will be exposed to various stressors, by which they are usually challenged in agricultural practice. These young colonies represent the backbone of every beekeeping business, and their healthy development is crucial for pollination efficiency and colony fitness. In a large scale replicated field trial, we will determine the response of young honey bee colonies to various stressors (malnutrition, pesticides, and their combination) when compared to full-sized colonies, on the individual as well as colony level. All findings of the project might be used to develop measures and recommendations to reduce residues of PPP in bee colonies and their bee products, especially in regions with a high degree of crops attractive to pollinators (such as fruit production, oilseed rape). The major aim of the project is not only the improvement of bee health in general but also to maintain beekeeping as a cornerstone of agriculture in Germany
