Development of asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) resistant to the Aspaargus virus 1 (AV-1)
Project
Project code: JKI-ZGO-08-4169
Contract period: 01.03.2015
- 28.02.2018
Purpose of research: Applied research
Nearly all asparagus fields in Germany infested with Asparagus virus 1 (AV-1) resulted in a decreasing quality and yield as well as in a reduced shelf life (asparagus decline). Main goal of the project is the transmission of resistance to AV-1 selected in the wild relative Asparagus amarus into breeding lines of the garden asparagus (Asparagus officinalis). In the future resistant asparagus cultivars can be bred to facilitate higher and stable yield over a long shelf life as a significant input for a sustainable production of asparagus. The AV-1 resistance will be transferred by interspecific hybridization and introgression backcrosses and its effectiveness in the genetic background of the garden asparagus A. officinalis is going to be tested. Additionally selection and breeding strategies based on molecular markers (MAS) will be developed.
