Joint project: Agronomic, economic and ecological evaluation of sorghum species and hybrids as energy crops. Subproject 2: sowing dates trial (Evaluation of sowing dates) and fertilization trial
Project
Project code: 22006810
Contract period: 01.05.2011
- 30.04.2014
Budget: 358,908 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Sorghum as C4-crop shows high yield potential, drought tolerance and water use efficiency. The low respectively according to present knowledge not existing vulnerability against European corn borer, corn smut respectively Western corn rootworm are further advantages. The use of sorghum as biogas substrate was tested in foregoing projects but an extensive evaluation concerning agronomical, economical and ecological characteristics is still open. This cooperative projects is determined to achieve a site-specific, environmental friendly and ecological sorghum production. Findings are transferred to farmers so that an increasing sorghum production can contribute to an ecologically sound energy production and increasing biodiversity in the agricultural landscape.
