Recording of antibiotics use and antimicrobial resistance in dogs, cats and horses including the respective reporting system (Antibiotikaeinsatz Hund, Katze, Pferd)
Project
Project code: 2820HS002
Contract period: 01.03.2021
- 28.02.2024

The aim of the project is to develop a concept for the continuous recording of antibiotic use as well as the results of sensitivity tests of relevant pathogens in different indications (respiratory and intestinal infections) in cats, dogs and horses for veterinary practices and to validate in a pilot study. In addition, the indications skin and mucous membrane infections and urinary tract infections in some animal species will be covered due to their higher relevance. The antibiotic use and resistance tests data will be electronically transmitted from the veterinary practice or laboratory software to the project database. The data transfer mechanisms will be organized in such a way that they can be in the context of monitoring or surveillance even after the end of the project. An additional goal is the development of an evaluation strategy for the use of antibiotics in order to quantitatively evaluate the frequency of use and to make it comparable between practices, animal species, indications and active substances. Finally, the aim is to investigate the association between the use of antibiotics and the occurrence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The development of automated text recognition procedure is a secondary objective of this study, which can further simplify the import of data from veterinary practices.
