Collaborative project: Development of DNA-based methods for the identification of fish and fishery products, as well as crustaceans and molluscs for practical use in the food and import control - subproject 1 (MARINEFOOD)
Project
Project code: 2816503814
Contract period: 01.07.2016
- 30.06.2019
Budget: 131,701 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Keywords: Tuna
"Germany is an important country for the import of fish and fish products. Food products of marine origin are regularly prone to the exchange or even intended adulteration on the level of ist species ingredients. It is therefore urgently necessary to provide food control authorities and food producers with adequate methods to identify and quantify species ingredients in marine foodstuff. We have developed a DNA-based analytical method which identifies and quantifies species by sequencing the entire genomic DNA isolated from the food product. We have proven here that this technology (named All-Food-Sequencing, AFS) is suitable to screen for species components in marine food and we also tested the performance of AFS relative to alternative approaches like meta-barcoding. Moreover, we have developed a novel algorithmic procedure, which supersedes the need for a complex computer cluster architecture, but facilitates to routinely conduct AFS food analysis on standard computers."
