Production and characterization of novel interspecific hybrids between Hordeum vulgare and H. bulbosum for transfer of valuable traits
Project
Project code: JKI-ZL-08-3149
Contract period: 01.01.2001
- 31.12.2013
Purpose of research: Applied research
The breeding of high-yielding elite cultivars has narrowed the genetic diversity in cultivated barley. This concerns genes for disease resistances. Hordeum bulbosum belongs to the secondary gene pool of the genus Hordeum L.. This wild species is of potential value for barley breeding. H. bulbosum is a source of novel genes for the improvement of barley by introgression. The wild species possesses many useful agronomic traits, including winter hardiness, drought and salt tolerance and resistances to many fungal and viral pathogens, which are important to transfer to barley. H. bulbosum is well adapted to a wide range of environment. A crossing programme was initiated to develop novel interspecific hybrids between H. vulgare L. and individual H. bulbosum accessions from different geographic origin of wild barley. The embryo-rescue technique was used to overcome problems of interspecific gene transfer. Hybrids have to be characterised using cytological analysis, molecular marker analysis and trait evaluation.
