Chair of Animal Nutrition (LTE)

Institution

Description

The Chair of Animal Nutrition at the Center of Life and Food Sciences Weihenstephan (WZW) is engaged in research and teaching with the three core areas of animal nutrition: feed science, nutrition physiology and animal food product quality. The focus lies on the species-appropriate and adequate nutrition of farm animals like dairy cows, beef cattle, pigs, laying hens and broilers. The different metabolic states of high-yielding livestock as well as desirable and undesirable secondary effects of certain feedstuffs and feed ingredients are examined, using state of the art methodology. Additional working priorities are the valuation of new feed sources (e.g. byproducts from the generation of renewable energy) and the nutritional assessment of feed additives (e.g. alternatives to feeding antibiotics). The Chair of Animal Nutrition at the Center of Life and Food Sciences Weihenstephan forms an interface in the complex network of high quality food production. It integrates agricultural plant production with food and nutritional sciences in terms of thematic as well as scientific and methodological aspects, through the transformation into animal primary products. In addition, there are strong thematic connections to the environmental sciences and veterinary medicine.
