Keeping layers without beak-trimming
Project
Project code: EIP-Agri-THÜ-2016-LPTVV01
Contract period: 01.01.2016
- 31.12.2018
Budget: 284,961 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: farming practice/activity, animal husbandry, marketing/supply chain
Starting in 2017, beak trimming of layers, a common practice nowadays, will no longer be allowed in Germany. Within this project, a cooperation between different stakeholders aims at developing and implementing practical recommendations to ensure animal welfare in layer flocks without beak-trimming specifically for Thuringia. Following a primary status report, participating layer flocks are visited monthly to collect relevant data and to examine birds for feather pecking and cannibalism. Given recommendations and measures taken will be transcribed in a concept for consulting services and management guidelines. This concept will be implemented in Thuringian layer farms with assistance of all stakeholders. Lessons learnt will be discussed with similar projects in other federal states. Meetings and trainings will be organized to share and spread knowledge among interested poultry farmers, aiming at establishing a base of knowledge to ensure sustainable welfare of layers.
