Selection and Establishment varoatolerant bee colonies VSH/SMR (SETBie in BW)
Project
Project code: EIP-Agri-BW-2018-LPTTGR
Contract period: 01.01.2018
- 31.12.2020
Budget: 634,551 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: farming practice/activity, animal husbandry, genetic resource
The varroamite causes enourmous damages, high losses of bee colonies and forces the beekeepers regularily to chemical treatments. Therefore a breeding solution for selection of varroatolerant bee colonies via the feature 'Varroa-Sensitive-Hygiene' (VSH = dispelling of varroainfected brood-cells) has to be established. In the project bee colonies will be characterized with an innovative combination of genetical methods. This combination of molecular methods will be complemented with classical examinations and vitality-tests. The breeding material will be tested genetically and this enables the establishment of genitical markers relevant to VSH. With the use of positiv selected bee colonies on mating stations (isolated places for mating of bee-queens) the quality 'varroatolerance' shall be spread to the common bee-breeding in the country. Furthermore through the integration of the beekeeper associations and the development of a cost-efficient marker-selection the premiss is created to enable the VSH-selection on an broad basis beyond the project-period to reduce the chemical treatments and the losses of bee colonies.
