Climate change

Project code: U 01/2019
Contract period: 01.04.2019 - 30.11.2021
Budget: 150,000 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

Climate change influences the hydrology and temperature regime of flowing waters significantly. In addition to the accumulation of extreme hydrological events such as heavy rain and associated floods, pronounced and prolonged dry weather phases with extreme low water are to be expected. Organisms, such as fish and macrozoobenthos, living in the water bodies are affected by these trends, and so is the ecological condition of flowing waters. In the context of necessary renaturation measures to improve the ecological status according to the EC-WFD, conflicts may arise in the context of climate change, because 1) climate change may influence the success of renaturation measures and 2) climate-induced changes in the biocoenoses living in the water bodies may lead to difficulties in the ecological status assessment according to the EC-WFD in the future. This may require an adaptation of assessment criteria and metrics, which is why the objectives of the KliMSA project are: 1. assessment of the consequences of climate change and extreme low flow periods on the eco-logi-cal status of watercourses. 2. adaptation of the assessment criteria and metrics of the ecological status assessment according to the EC WFD 3. development of measures to reduce the impacts of climate change on aquatic biodiversity and to increase the resilient properties of watercourses 4. elaboration of strategies to communicate the success of EC WFD measures
