Project code: BMZ 2-2007
Contract period: 01.10.2002 - 31.10.2007
Budget: 1,250,000 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

To sustainably increase the aquaculture production of poor farmers in Asia and Africa, thereby contributing to the improvement of their livelihoods. A multidisciplinary project is proposed which will produce a GIS-based decision support tool which will extrapolate recommendation domains for smallholder aquaculture development with the objective of achieving high potential benefit. Case studies will be conducted in four countries (2 in Africa, 2 in Asia) to identify factors and causal relationships and necessary enabling conditions responsible for successful development of aquaculture that will be incorporated into the decision support tool. The system will be installed on an Internet website and can be accessed by external users to produce estimates, based on own entries of enabling factors (e.g. technology interventions and improvements, training and advisory services, cost). The resulting recommendation domains and scenario maps will provide an important decision support tool for planners, extensionists and researchers to identify where support for promoting aquaculture and for which categories of small and marginal farmers, can give maximum impact. As aquaculture is a new technology to most farmers in Africa and even in Asia, such information should ensure much higher success rates among adopting farmers who receive advice from extensionists after these have applied the planning tool to estimate the best possible recommendations for the farmers. Scientists can use the tool to estimate what technology innovation steps they need to invent or adapt in order to achieve targeted gains under given scenarios.
