Aktion Wald! – Learning how to read the forest Aktion Wald! (mission forest) is a nationwide programme for schools and other educational facilities. Aktion Wald! offers children and young people the opportunity to discover their personal relationship with the nature surrounding them in a different place of learning – the forest. The forest is a habitat that is familiar to everybody. The programme aims to provide the means and ways of studying and exploring the forest in its abundance and variability. Thereby the children and young people create their own perspective of nature and forest. They add the new discoveries to their understanding of the world and thus widen and clarify their perception. A clear idea, an adequate knowledge and the development of an own access to nature are essential to build an individual, resource-sensible, climate and environment protecting attitude. With the help of the WaldKiste (forest box), the WaldExkursion (forest field trip)and the PflanzPaket (plant package) children are able to gain access to nature and environment as well as a first understanding of bio-diversity. Individual school projects implement a relation to and between the forest and climate change. From 2014 to 2016 will be given the opportunity to 600 schools nationwide to participate in the program Action Wald!. Action Wald! Is characterized by a wide range bundle, so that the schools and other educational facilities can put together their right offer and use school-specific priorities. A further object is to intensify the networking of schools with each other and with extracurricular partners like forest enterprises, forest nurseries or environmental centers. During this networking will be support on a long term way the total target of the project: To get the pupils enthusiastic about the importance, care, protection and sustaining of the indigenous forest. Even if the outcome of the resulting individual projects are not measurable in terms of Co2 saving and the effect seems to remains open, the involved children make their perception and suggested solution trough the forest experience visible and comprehensible. Ideally they succeed to be taken seriously as players with its own perceptions and ideas and contribute to concrete Co2 decreases in their environment. The WaldKiste contains assorted tools usable for nature observations. Magnifying glasses, pocket mirrors, spates, sample cups and a lot more, are part of the tool box pupils can use during their WaldExkursionen (forest excursions) or in their school gardens. The WaldExkursion (forest field trip): Visits to the forest are an integral part of Aktion Wald! School excursions often fail due to lack of financial resources. As participants of Aktion Wald! schools are able to request financial benefits for their WaldExkursionen. The PflanzPaket (plant package): The PflanzPaket transfers nature observation into the classroom. Nature becomes a part of school via bushes, shrubs and seeds. Construction manuals for nesting and shelter sites encourage children to build living spaces for animals and insects within the schoolyard.
