Contract period: 01.01.2012 - 31.12.2019
Purpose of research: Applied research

DO-HEALTH is a large European multi-center trial with the aim - To establish whether simple and targeted dietary and physical activity measures will prevent disease at older age - To assess the cost-benefit of the interventions. In our immunological part, we aim at evaluating whether long-term consumption of vitamin D3 (VD3) and/or omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LC-PUFA) vs. placebo has an impact on selected immune parameters in the elderly. In an in vitro approach we are assessing whether incubation with the VD3- and n-3 LC-PUFA-enriched sera of the participants alter the production of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in monocytes. Moreover, regulatory T cells are phenotyped in whole blood. These parameters will be assessed in 750 seniors at baseline, 12, 24, and 36 months.

The final results are going to be obtained in 2018 when the study is expected to be unblinded.
