Collaborative project: carbon fertilizer from phosphorus-rich manure by carbonization with nitrogen recovery. Subproject 3 (Karbonduenger)
Project
Project code: 2818105215
Contract period: 15.08.2017
- 14.10.2020
Budget: 12,500 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
"The aim of the project was to produce carbonaceous N-P fertilizers from farm manure. For this purpose, different techniques were to be combined: separation, drying, carbonization, ammonia adsorption, fertilizer formulation.
The investigations showed that slurry can be separated with a high phosphorus removal efficiency. About 79% phosphorus removal into the solid phase, the retentate, was achieved. By coupling the PYREG reactor with a drying module, the dry matter content of the retentate could be increased to the 80 % required for carbonization in an energetically and process-technically efficient manner. Subsequent thermal treatment of the retentate under exclusion of air in a PYREG reactor produces a carbonaceous product, the so-called carbonizate. Plant trials in the greenhouse showed under different conditions that the phosphorus in the carbonisates is retained in plant-available form. Carbonisates from farm manure are therefore a target-oriented way to process liquid manure, fermentation residues and dung in such a way that they become a transportable raw material for the production of fertilizers."
