Innovative porpoise alerting device PAL: certification, further development and commercialisation (PAL-Komm)
Project
Project code: 28RZ3IP067
Contract period: 18.01.2018
- 19.01.2021
Budget: 291,546 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: harbour porpoise, acoustic prevention of by-catch
The alerting system PAL synthesises harbour porpoise alerting calls to warn them specifically. PAL was proven to reduce porpoise by-catch in the Baltic Sea by more than 70%. Here we aim at further developing PAL to synthesize alerting calls of other porpoise populations. We also aim at specifically warning other species prone to by-catch of fishing gear and other anthropogenic threats. We also plan to alert species which show mass strandings, such as e.g. pilot whales and sperm whales of the proximity of hazardous coasts. We want to develop PAL to cover the wide market of acoustic devices currently in use in other fisheries and construction world wide. Our goal is to significantly reduce whale mortality and acoustic injury with new and taylored concepts.
