Collaborative Project: Smart Wood Supply Chain Management (SmartWood)

Project

Project code: 22015317
Contract period: 01.09.2019 - 31.08.2022
Budget: 249,934 Euro
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment
Keywords: Digitalization, Industries 4.0

The megatrend of digitisation - industry 4.0 - has also found its way into the forest-wood-supply chain and it is therefore important to identify and take advantage of new digital solutions at both operational and strategic levels. For a continuous evolution of the forest-wood-supply chain towards industry 4.0, a benefit-oriented migration approach is needed. Such an approach forms the basis of this research project. The goal of this research project is to identify and evaluate the potential of industry 4.0 in the forest-wood-supply chain along the value chain. During the project’s duration, (a) the operational potential of industry 4.0 for the optimization of existing processes of the value chain, and (b) the strategic potentials of industry 4.0 for the further development of existing or completely new business models will be identified. Based on these findings, a differentiated and holistic assessment of the ecological and social benefits of these potentials will be conducted. The following results will be generated in the course of this research project: - Process map with operational potential of industry 4. 0 in the forest-wood-supply chain - Detailed description of extended business models (e. g. new service offers) - Evaluation of new value chains through experimental, disruptive business model scenarios - Creation of an evaluation matrix of the strategic and operational potential - Documentation of experiences from case studies With these results, the outlined research project does not only form a foundation for further research in the field of wood supply 4.0, it is also the first step when implementing industry 4.0 in forestry and wood industry practice.
