A new concept for organic tomato breeding

Project

Project code: 2819OE120
Contract period: 01.04.2020 - 31.03.2021
Budget: 51,100 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: vegetable production, crop protection, plant health, resistance, seed and planting material, organic farming

Despite increasing demand, cultivation of organically produced tomato has come to a stillstand in Germany. Leaf mold of tomatoes caused by Passlora fulva (syn. Fulvia fulva, Cladosporium fulvum) has been an increasing problem in greenhouse cropping. The seasonal, cost-effective cultivation under plastic foil is particularly affected. Varieties which are declared to be resistant so far do however not provide a sufficient protection anymore being exposed to a high risk of infection in traditional growing areas like the vicinity of Lake Constance in Germany. The aim of the project is to develop varieties well adapted to organic cropping conditions with stable resistance and good taste.
