Transmission analysis of the chronic bee paralysis virus (CBPV) and its impact on breeding honeybee queens (Impact of the chronic bee paralysis virus (CBPV) on breeding honeybee queens)
Project
Project code: ML Referat 102.2
Contract period: 01.08.2021
- 31.07.2024
Budget: 75,000 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: apiculture, bee diseases, chronic bee paralysis virus (CBPV), breeding honeybee queens
The chronic bee paralysis virus (CBPV) represents a viral pathogen of the honeybee. Instead of the majority of known bee viruses, the mite Varroa destructor is not a vector in transmission of CBPV. The virus is transmitted by direct contact between infected individuals and high infectious feces within the hive. Among the last years, an increase of CBPV infections is detected in (northern) Germany. Efficient and sustainable methods to treat infected hives do still not exist. According to CBPVs increase, a correlation between mating of bee queens with infected drones is assumed. But also reliable studies on this field are still missing. In this project, we will focus on the transmission of CBPV in micro hives with instrumental fertilized queens. The results should clarify (i) if queens get infected with CBPV by infected sperm, (ii) if haploid sons (drones) and (iii) diploid daughters (worker and queens) are infected and affected by CBPV. Moreover, the dynamics and epidemiology of CBPV will be analyzed in micro hives by individually marked individuals.
