Purpose of research: Applied research
The cultivation of fast-growing tree species contributes to the relief of the environment significantly through the increased binding of CO2 in the form of dendromass. In addition, the production of renewable raw materials can help to preserve biological diversity and to enrich the cultural landscape.
Material or energetic use of renewable raw materials allows the development of sustainable forms of economy in the sense of Agenda 21 and will gain greater importance in the future with regard to the environmentally friendly substitution of fossil fuels. Renewable raw materials are largely CO2-neutral, so that the existing greenhouse effect will not be aggravated when they are used. The project focuses on the following objectives: (1) increasing the yield per area, (2) expanding the range of raw material crops, (3) increase of tolerance to biotic and abiotic stressors and (4) improvement of wood quality and properties. The aim is to create the basis for the provision of forest reproductive material of fast-growing tree species with improved biomass production for use in the forest as well as on agricultural areas in short rotation. A significant increase in the quality and quantity of forest reproductive material available on the market contributes to diversification and thus to an increase in biodiversity. Fast-growing tree species such as hybrid aspen or hybrid larch are also suitable for the creation of shelterwoods for reforestation of calamity areas with more demanding tree species.
