Decentralized production of larvae of the black soldier fly (BSF) and processing into fish feed on farms in Bavaria
Project
Project code: EIP-Agri-BY-2020-THAUVPD
Contract period: 01.01.2020
- 31.12.2022
Budget: 385,389 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: animal husbandry, waste/pollution, product/service
Insects are a sustainable high-protein feed that can be produced regionally. So far, there is still little on-farm experience on insect breeding and use as feed. The aim of the project is to test a regional insect production on a farm. The larvae of the black soldier fly (BSF) can use a variety of organic residues as feed. For the purpose of the project, feed mixtures with the highest possible proportion of regional residues will be developed and tested. Some insects have been authorized in the EU as feed for aquaculture since 2017. Subsequently, concepts for the regional production of fish feed from insects will be first and foremost tested and a feed study will be carried out with the produced insects as well as the manufactured fish feed. Legal assessments of the requirements for production and suitable feed for farmers will be worked out. The aim is to investigate feed conversion and from this an economic model as well as guidelines for the use of regional residual flows as insect feed for agricultural enterprises will be elaborated.
