Collaborative project: Development of a plant granulate with defined functionality based on construction residues - subproject (GranuGruen)
Project
Project code: 2818903D20
Contract period: 01.05.2022
- 30.04.2025
Budget: 128,591 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: cultivation, horticulture, public green, irrigation, sustainability, urban agriculture
GranuGruen's overall goal is to prepare existing and new urban green spaces for increasingly extreme weather conditions and at the same time to promote the recycling of residual materials from the construction sector. Climate changes have been strongly felt in recent years, especially in urban areas. Dry periods lasting weeks are followed by heavy rainfall events with masses of water that cannot be absorbed by the compacted soils of the inner cities and flood sewer systems. Urban green spaces suffer enormously from these two extremes, although they are of great importance for the microclimate in urban areas. GranuGruen therefore plans to convert inorganic (as well as organic) recycled materials from construction residues into open-pored storage granules with defined properties and functions and to use them in urban green and tree strips, but also in raised beds and green roofs. Long-term storage and controlled release of water is to be ensured through the use of the granules. In addition, it will be tested how inoculation of the storage substrates with soil microbes affects the health, growth and yield of plants. Various methods are to be developed for decentralized granulate production and for the optimal establishment and maintenance of cultivated areas using manufactured granulates. In case of a positive outcome of the project, the extension of the application area of the granules to the urban horticultural sector is intended.
