Project code: EIP-Agri-2022-Ni-BWE
Contract period: 01.01.2022 - 31.12.2024
Budget: 430,516 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: soil, water, energy

In the EIP-project 'Water Management and Microclimate under Agri-Photovoltaic Systems', methods for sustainable water management and water cycles are compared and optimized to create the prerequisite that water consumption by agriculture in Lower Saxony can be minimized even during dry periods. Micro-irrigation is, according to the current state of knowledge, the most efficient irrigation method for the intended application in terms of water demand. Within the scope of the project, the supplementary water requirement, the energy and working time requirement, as well as the costs associated with the measures will be recorded for the various test plots to enable a comparison of the different variants of microirrigation under the given conditions. The physical protection and partial shading of the cultivated area by the agrivoltaic system creates an altered microclimate, which, with the help of a comprehensive network of sensors and irrigation based on demand and efficiency, enables efficient water management. In addition, these methods are suitable for reducing erosion and minimizing the runoff of nutrient-rich soil into adjacent water bodies.
