Innovative plant protection strategies to reduce the use of resources for sustainable fruit production in the face of climate change
Project
Project code: EIP-Agri-2022-BW-PPGSKBBV
Contract period: 01.01.2022
- 31.12.2024
Budget: 658,895 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: plant production and horticulture, pest/disease control, biodiversity, climate change
Climate change and the transition of apple cultivation in Baden-Württemberg to modern production systems, affect the spread of relevant pathogens and pests. This must be studied at an early stage, to adapt accordingly to the new conditions. By 2030, usage of crop protection products must be reduced by 40-50 %. Innovative strategies of controlling diseases and pests will be necessary, to be able to continue producing high quality and market-conform fruit in the region. New and alternative approaches using resistance properties of varieties or adapted crop management must be investigated. Priority is given to biological concepts (BCA), optical sensors in combination with methods to analyze data, as well as molecular biological approaches in an overarching integrated production system. Innovative plant protection strategies will be scientifically tested in a model plant at the KOB (monitoring beneficials-pests-interaction), subsequently implemented at commercial farms and evaluated for practicability, profitability and marketing potential. Finally, the innovative strategies will be introduced to fruit growing.
